Yeah, that's right. There is a real time of the year when an overwhelming number of sweet cats, babies are born in this world. While the cute factor is high during this time, this is the stress of taking care of these kittens, many of which are in DoveLewis or in a motherless shelter. And taking care of these orphaned and adorable creatures is hard work! Like taking care of newborn humans, newborn kittens need constant attention, food and help during the first stage of their lives. Have you ever wondered how it is to act as a substitute mother for these little creatures? Dr. Erika Loftin, DoveLewis, a veterinarian of relief, shares details about the income and exits of the caterer. What do you expect when you care about newborn kittens? Care for orphan neonatal kittens carries the clock effort, but it can be done if you are willing to put in time and dedication. You have to be prepared to get up all night for meals. It's very similar to taking care of a human baby in that sense. However, they grow much faster, so you don't do it for months at a time. But it still requires a similar dedication. You definitely have nights without sleep and periods of concern. Are you getting enough to eat? Are they growing up like they're supposed to? It can also be very sad sometimes, because not everyone does. Some studies say that the mortality rate of kittens can be up to 40%. But you definitely create a real bond for them through that period. How often do you feed newborn kittens? Neonatal kittens need to be fed regularly day and night. For the first week of life, they need to be fed two to three hours. After that, you can usually stretch it every four hours. These kittens should be fed by bottles using the milk substitute kitten (or KMR), which comes in the form of liquid or powder. It is the equivalent of the formula you would use for a bottle-fed baby, except it is formulated for cats. The formula, bottles and nipples are available at the counter in most pet stores. You don't need a recipe. The instructions will give you a guide on how much to feed based on the weight of the cat. When preparing the bottle, be careful with the flow of milk. If you make the hole in the nipple too big, the kitten can suck, or drown. The bottles come with instructions on how to prepare the nipple for milk flow. However, if you are fighting, I would advise you to seek help from your veterinarian. Never cut the whole nipple tip, as this is often what makes cats suck. What about the bathing time? Orphan neonatal kittens need help urinating and defecating. Generally a mother cat would do that with her rough tongue. Without the available mother, use a hot and wet cotton ball or cloth and gently rub on your genitals and anal area. If they are well hydrated, which is your target, then you should stimulate them after each feeding and urine comes out. This stimulation usually has to occur during the first three to four weeks of life. Be sure to clean and dry the area after you have done your business. Newborn kittens need special clothes? You can use a simple box with soft blankets to contain the kitten. For the heat, I would suggest using a bottle of hot water wrapped in a towel. Just put it between two blankets that border the entire box. It would discourage people from using a heating pad, because it's easier for the kitten to get overheated that way. What are some special management techniques to keep them healthy and safe? In the first four weeks of his life, minimize the number of people who handle the kitten. During that time, they have not yet built their immune systems, and are prone to diseases and infections. Make sure you wash your hands before and after every time you handle them. Avoid allowing kitten to interact with other animals, including other cats. It is never known how another animal will treat a small kitten, and neonatal cats are fragile at this stage of life. If you have more than one kitten in the same bed, you can definitely keep them in the same box. They can help keep us warm. If they are different liters, you can keep them in the same box unless they are radically different ages or sizes. Also, do not mix sick and healthy kittens. When should I take kittens to the vet? In general, it is a good idea to stay in touch with your veterinarian during the first four weeks of the life of the kitten so that they can help you monitor your progress and answer any questions that may arise. Your veterinarian will probably see you once, but you can request more checks depending on the progress you report along the way.
